The Hot Springs
Deep in the untamed, green jungles of Flores at the foot of the great volcano, Gunung Egon, there lies a little oasis of serenity and calmness.
A spring bubbles with clear water here in the lap of the volcano, almost to boiling temperatures, combining its streams in multiple small basins to a wild creek, sweeping refreshing and cool down the mountainside. Here, tired bodies can relax themselves leaving space for the mind to wander and flutter in the unusual environment. Mighty trees and enormous green plants become a stage for the flying dance of dragonflies and butterflies, inviting you to leave everything behind for this moment. Even through the thick forest canopy of the jungle, single sunbeams find their way through, soaking the forest floor in dashing contrast between darkness and light.
Only two paths lead to this oasis, each showing a different face of the jungle. The first path is wild and leads down steep hillsides past jungle giants and down to the river. It leads once more uphill, where you will begin to notice the rising heat of the water with each step until, hidden by a small hill, we’ve reached the spring. The second, longer path shows the jungle as a habitat of us humans. In little jungle fields, fruits and vegetables grow, the fertile ground sowed and watered by farmers of Flores. The ascent is gentle, but constant and through shoulder-high grass, which alternates through short intervals. It’s an eerie but curious feeling- you will hardly see the ground during the hike. Right before the small hill, this path meets with the first and leads to the same destination, however it’s a much easier walk to the spring.
The hot water of the spring can make you tired, so before we make our way back, we enjoy a relaxing picnic to gather our thoughts and our strength. We recommend the easier path on the return journey, but whichever you decide to take will depend on the energy level and appetite for adventure of the participants.
