Kelimutu the holy mountain
The journey begins in the night and leads over serpentine switchbacks up towards just under the summit of Kelimutu. At the dawn of the morning during the march up towards the summit, the first impressive beauties of this natural reserve are introduced to you.
After arriving at the summit, it will be just a few minutes wait until the sun emerges over the horizon and replaces the cold and darkness of the night with warmth and light. The sun’s rays tiptoe around the edge of the craters, quickly revealing the brilliant color of the crater lakes of this holy place.
Legends tell of the souls of those who have passed on residing in these lakes. In the mystical grandeur of the sunrise these legends become a sort of reality. The way back to the resort however, will lead us back to the reality of our world, but we’ll have taken our experience from this one. Past sunlit green rice fields, deep valleys overgrown with jungle life and bald peaks; the path displays the true diversity of landscape on the island of Flores.
In the village of Moni, a daily market presents the vibrant and colorful exotic fruits and vegetables of the mountains. Little stands and friendly people invite you on a short tour of discovery. The village of Wolowaru allows people to view and experience the manual processing of cashew nuts, and a restaurant serves travelers typical traditional Indonesian cuisine for lunchtime. At about half of the way back to the Budi Sun Resort we interrupt our journey one last time for a revitalizing visit to the white sand beach of Koka, and have ourselves a short break to cast off the coming exhaustion of a long and eventful day.
