Egon, the sleeping giant
The treetops of the awakening forest obscure the sight of the goal, the summit of the volcano Gunung Egon. The rising sun begins first, warming the air, and the only obstacles on the way are the rocks and fallen trees of the jungle.
Our guide offers the spirits of the natural world a cigarette, so that they provide for us and accommodate us on our ascent. The realm becomes steeper and your attention moves from the surrounding natural setting to your next step.
As we leave the protecting forest behind us, the challenge of the ascent to the top of the volcano, Egon, becomes apparent: barren, steep slopes of boulder fields are the volcano’s defense against us intruders. The way becomes still steeper and the solid footstep toddles. Small gnarled bushes duck in the cracked crevices, affording us no shadow. The water supply slowly dwindles, and the sun is no longer a friend, but rather an ally of the volcano against the uninvited visitors. Walking along the boulder fields, adrenaline shoots into your heated blood when a supposedly secured stone shifts itself and with a loud smash, shatters deep below.
Suddenly the concentration on the next step is interrupted – we stop a second. A refreshing gust of wind dries the cool beads of sweat from the skin, your vision clears, the pulse slows down: the volcano has been overcome, his summit has been reached.
The imposing view and the unique majesty of the crater penetrates your exhausted soul. The wind smells of sulfur, the perpetual breath of the volcano fills the air with a continual hissing. Below, a turquoise crater of rainwater throws the sun’s rays back out to us and from the south wall of the crater, the singing of swallows drowns the breath of the volcano.
The body receives its power back, and the mind, fully aware of the great accomplishment, reflects on this extraordinary experience.
As the clouds sink onto the summit around midday, the time has come to return to the base. The descent is just as strenuous as the climb, but as soon as the forest has been reached, the shadows from the trees ease the rest of the journey. In the mountain village, from where we departed with our guide earlier in the day, our driver awaits to bring us back to the Budi Sun Resort, exhausted but satisfied.
