Flores is one of the largest islands of Indonesia. The amazing diversity here is evident as one passes through a dreamscape of different landforms.
In the lowlands are the rainforest and savanna, and towards the island middle, are mountains rising up to 2300 m.
The population of the Island, around 1.5 million people, is mostly catholic Christians, due to the former Portuguese occupation. Religion is actively practiced, and belief plays a great role in social life on the island.
To date, few tourists have visited Flores. There are no enormous hotels or chain restaurants on the island. Accommodation and restaurants are mostly family owned and offer a homely atmosphere. The culture of the Floresians has not yet adapted to the modern, hectic world. Life here is calmer, and only in the bigger cities like Ende and Maumere would you find the first signs of this influence in the form of supermarkets
